Part of the Strategic AI Governance for School Boards Series

Module IV treats artificial intelligence as an ethics, equity, and bias question, not only as a capability question. It builds on purpose, learning evidence, and governance and asks the board who benefits before it asks what the tool can do. Beyond Technology SAIGSB focuses on governance, public trust, and organizational coherence rather than technology implementation. Participants examine how unexamined bias, access-as-devices, and unnamed ethical tradeoffs shape what the community believes the board decided about fairness. Designed for Practicing Board Members and Trustees Created specifically for busy school board members, each experience emphasizes reflection, application, and a concrete governance action that can be taken at the next work session or regular meeting. Responses are for professional reflection and are not externally evaluated. Guided by the LEADS Framework Every module is grounded in the LEADS Framework, providing a consistent structure for analyzing challenges, strengthening coherence, and guiding intentional governance decisions over time. A Connected Governance Journey Participants may complete Module IV as a standalone experience or continue through the full AIGSB series. Companion modules address purpose and strategic direction, teaching and assessment, governance and policy, data stewardship, professional learning, organizational change, and future-ready board leadership—always from the dais rather than the classroom or the server room.

Distinguish Neutrality of Appearance from Fairness of Outcome

Identify when a system is treated as impartial because it is automated—and what outcome pattern by group would make bias visible.

Keep Opportunity Broader than Devices

Learn how boards require literacy, support, and participation data—not only a device count—before access is called solved.

Move from Reflection to Board Action

Apply the LEADS questions to identify one governance action that improves what the board requires to see before an AI item is treated as fair.

About the learning experience

Boards often meet this topic as a capability demonstration or a device-count report. By then outcomes may already split by group, and no one has asked who the data represent. This Governance Application Experience helps board members examine those dynamics and identify actions that keep fairness attached to the vote. Through concise video segments, guided reflection, practical governance applications, and professional dialogue, participants move beyond understanding concepts to applying systems thinking at the dais. As participants progress through the experience, they complete a series of structured reflections and governance applications that are compiled into a downloadable reflective journal. The journal serves as an ongoing board resource, capturing insights, analyses, and board actions that can inform future agenda work. Participants conclude the experience with: * A deeper understanding that neutrality of appearance is not fairness of outcome * One specific governance action that improves what the board requires to see before a policy or public statement * Initial steps the board would take, written so they can be explained to a colleague or the board president * A downloadable Professional Development Certificate of Completion * A downloadable reflective governance journal

How the Experience Works

Participants move from system understanding to board action through a structured process of reflection, analysis, application, and governance planning. Video → Reflect → Apply → Integrate → Governance Action → Dialogue
