Part of the Strategic Leadership for Digital Learning Series
Module II is part of the Strategic Leadership for Digital Learning (SLDL) series. This experience helps leaders understand how digital learning systems function as interconnected ecosystems and how leadership actions influence system behavior and outcomes over time. Beyond Technology SLDL focuses on leadership, systems, and organizational improvement rather than technology implementation alone. Participants examine how leadership decisions, competing priorities, and system dynamics influence meaningful outcomes. Designed for Practicing Leaders Created specifically for busy educational leaders, each experience emphasizes reflection, application, and practical leadership action that can be implemented immediately within schools, districts, and organizations. Guided by the LEADS Framework Every module is grounded in the LEADS Framework, providing a consistent structure for analyzing challenges, strengthening coherence, and guiding intentional leadership decisions over time. A Connected Leadership Journey Participants may complete Module II as a standalone experience or continue through the full SLDL series, exploring systems thinking, equity, instructional leadership, artificial intelligence, data stewardship, organizational change, and future-ready leadership.
Meet Your Instructor
Dr. Jeffrey Maiden is a professor and former educational leader with a passion for helping leaders navigate the complexity of digital learning. Drawing on experience in leadership, research, and professional learning, he created the Strategic Leadership for Digital Learning (SLDL) suite to help busy educational leaders better understand systems, strengthen coherence, and take purposeful action. His work is guided by the LEADS Framework and a commitment to practical, meaningful leadership development.
A Welcome Message for Your Digital Leadership Journey!
In this brief introduction video, Dr. Jeffrey Maiden, creator of the experience, welcomes you and In this introductory video, you will explore why digital learning systems behave in ways that are often difficult to predict and why effective leaders must understand how interconnected system elements influence one another over time.
Perspectives about the Series from Educational Leaders
Leadership Perspective: "The experience challenged me to think beyond a district management paradigm toward a digital stewardship approach that frames leadership through relationships, instructional purpose, organizational culture, and professional judgment."
Practical Relevance: "As I transitioned into a district leadership role, I found myself returning to the ideas presented in each video as they closely mirrored the decisions I was making in practice."
Expert Perspective: The LEADS Framework for Strategic Leadership, which Dr. Jeff Maiden developed to improve educators' leadership development, is a must for all leaders who seek to deepen their knowledge of evidence-informed decision-making.
Reflection and Professional Growth: "Rather than offering a prescriptive model of leadership, the series encouraged thoughtful reflection."
Overall Experience: "Most importantly, the series strengthened my understanding that strategic digital leadership is ultimately an act of stewardship..."
Understand How Systems Behave
Identify the connections, relationships, and dynamics that influence outcomes within digital learning systems.
Recognize Interdependence
Explore how decisions in one part of a system influence other parts, often creating unintended consequences.
Lead Through Strategic Intervention
Apply the LEADS Framework to identify leverage points and develop leadership actions that support meaningful system improvement.
About the course
Educational leaders often attempt to solve complex challenges through isolated solutions. Yet digital learning systems are interconnected environments where decisions, policies, tools, and practices influence one another over time. This Leadership Application Experience helps leaders examine how systems function, where patterns emerge, and how leadership actions can influence system behavior. Through concise video segments, guided reflection, practical application activities, and professional dialogue, participants move beyond understanding systems to leading within them. As participants progress through the experience, they complete a series of structured reflections and leadership applications that are compiled into a downloadable reflective journal. The journal serves as an ongoing professional resource, capturing insights, analyses, and leadership actions that can inform future decision-making. Participants conclude the experience with: * A deeper understanding of systems thinking and digital learning ecosystems * A completed systems analysis of their own context * A LEADS-based leadership action * An initial implementation strategy * A downloadable professional development certificate of completion * A downloadable reflective leadership journal
How the Experience Works
Participants move from understanding to action through a structured process of reflection, analysis, application, and leadership planning. Video → Reflect → Apply → Integrate → Leadership Action → Dialogue
